Cuba is a relatively compact country, making it possible to discover the best of the scenery and the sights in two to three weeks.  Havana, the start and end point for most travellers, is often the stand out highlight – encapsulating as it does, the vibrancy, historical interest and salsa beat that characterises Cuba.  Classic cars abound, as do cigar factories, revolutionary plazas and images of Che Guevara and Castro.

West of Havana is the World Heritage Vinales Valley.  Its dramatic landscape is dominated by towering rocky karst outcrops known as Mogotes surrounded by fertile fields of tobacco leaves.  Near by is the superb walking area of Las Terrazas, a UNESCO Biosphere reserve where gentle paths lead through coffee plantations to waterfalls and bathing pools. Journey south east, through the tropical rainforest covering the Escambray mountains, and you will reach Trinidad – the traffic-free, beautifully preserved colonial city that is one of Cuba’s real jewels and also a designated World Heritage Site.

Not far from Trinidad is Cuba’s highest Mountain – Pico Turquino.  At 1,972 metres it provides a two-day challenge for the keen walker and a chance to gain a 360 degree view of the island from the summit.  This mountainous terrain also provided Castro with one of his hideouts when plotting the revolution.

The eastern tip of Cuba also holds much interest with the historic and relaxed coastal town of Baracoca – the oldest on the island - contrasting with the notorious modern-day prison facility at Guantanamo.  The region is replete with lush vegetation, high peaks and beautiful beaches.  It’s also a haven for an abundance of exotic flora and fauna.

From east to west, Cuba offers one delight after another. From mountain tops to pristine white beaches the scenery is wonderfully varied and endlessly enticing.  Together with the fascinating history, tropical Caribbean climate and welcoming people, Cuba will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. But don’t take our word for it, discover Cuba’s charm for yourself on our Cuban Trails walking holiday.
