Our grading system explained
Trekking Peaks
Trekking peaks offer an extra challenge for the committed trekker. Some trekking peaks such as Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Phongun Razi in Burma and Mount Toubkal in Morocco simply offer a more strenuous level of trekking that includes a tough, summit ascent. Whereas others like Stok Kangri in Ladakh, Island Peak in Nepal and Pisco Peak in Peru are more technical and require the use of ropes, ice axes and crampons. Indeed, trekking peaks often bridge the gap in expertise needed between the more technical realm of mountaineering and a challenging trek.
Our trekking peaks vary in height from Mont Blanc (4,810m/15,781ft) in Switzerland to Mera Peak (6,476m / 21,246ft) in Nepal, but all trekking peak routes will offer something extra in the way of difficulty and reward. Our routes are carefully planned to provide the best possible acclimatisation, often with a superb trek in to reach the mountain’s base camp. Island Peak for example takes you along the trail to Everest Base Camp, the climb of Chachacomani Peak in Bolivia is preceded by the classic Cordillera Real trek and a trek up the stunning Markha Valley in Ladakh provides the necessary acclimatisation to tackle Stok Kangri.
When a long trek is not possible to aid acclimatisation we will include a smaller acclimatisation peak or two in the itinerary as, for example, with Mont Blanc in the Alps. Our well-trained, professional guides also provide skills training where necessary to help prepare for a successful ascent. For the higher, more remote trekking peaks we will also provide a satellite phone and a Gamow bag in case of an emergency; your safety is our primary concern.
Trekking peaks are open to fit, determined walkers who have previously undertaken 'strenuous' treks; previous mountaineering experience is an advantage with several of our trekking peaks but not essential with the exception of Island Peak. Please contact our Operations Manager, Niki Morgan, if you have any queries about your suitability; we will review your experience before accepting you onto one our trekking peak trips.
