A Winter Walk in the Jebel Sahro

In January 2018, our Managing Director, Steve Berry travelled to the Jebel Sahro region of Morocco, on our ‘Winter Walk in the Jebel Sahro’ trekking holiday. This nine-day trip begins and ends in Morocco’s lively capital, Marrakesh, where traditional Moroccan culture is teeming at every turn. There’s time to explore the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa in Marrakesh's old city and discover its bustling souk – an unmissable marketplace experience that will be hard to forget. During Steve’s time in Marrakesh, he cherished the experience of staying in a riad; a traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden or courtyard.

From Marrakesh, Steve continued his Moroccan journey with a fantastic road journey over the Tizi n' Tichka pass in the Atlas Mountains before reaching the starting point of the trek in the Jebel Sahro.

The Jebel Sahro region lies between the High Atlas Mountains and the Sahara and is characterised by desert-like landscapes. With good walking trails and moderate winter temperatures, the dramatic rugged mountains, scenic gorges and towering rock pinnacles make this the perfect destination for winter walking. The trek begins at the lowest point, Hanedour, and then over four days gradually leads up to the highest point, an optional ascent of Kouach 2,500m/8,497ft.Upon reaching the summit there are spectacular views, with the snowy Atlas Mountains dominating the north.A typical day during the trek involves around 5-6 hours walking accompanied by an expert trekking team. Picnic lunches are enjoyed en route and traditional Moroccan meals are served at camp in the evening. Camp consists of dome tents pitched in idyllic locations, a dining tent and basic bathroom facilities.
