Gangkar Punsum Approach
This video was captured by our MD, Steve Berry, during his latest expeditions to this incredibly remote area of Bhutan. Steve has long-held a fascination with Gangkar Punsum, 7,550m/24,770ft and ever since his 1986 expedition, when he attempted the unclimbed summit, he had vowed to return to explore the southern side of the unconquered mountain.
In this video we follow Steve on our Gangkar Punsum Wilderness Exploration Trek (formerly Gangkar Punsum Approach), a 27-day trip with 15 days trekking. Steve explores the incredible remote countryside around the base of Gangkar Punsum, trekking from Jakar in the Bumthang Valley and proceeding up the Chamkhar Chhu Valley right up to Melunghi Gang, 7,000m/22,965ft on the Tibetan border. From here the trek continues up to the unexplored Jumbo Jet Valley, where Steve and the team reach a col at 17,800ft with rewarding panoramic views, including a breathtaking close-up sighting of Gangkar Punsum itself. Excitingly, it’s just after this col that Steve and the team make a mysterious discovery on a steep mountainside, see our video here for Steve’s interesting theory…
