Sahara Camel Trek, Morocco

When a young Steve Berry stood on the Tizi n'Test pass, and looked out to see the distant edge of the Sahara Desert, he knew that future adventures lay in that direction. 50 years later, Steve returned to Morocco to finally fulfil his dream to trek in the Sahara.

Travelling with a group of friends, and a guide, Steve journeyed east from Marakesh, across another high road pass, to reach the small town of Mhamid. There the group met their camp crew and the camel team who will transport all their gear, and set off on an exciting 6 day trek.

Leaving the remnants of former settlements behind, they were soon in a remote landscape with no inhabitants, buildings or light pollution. The group trekked through varied desert terrain and along the Wadi Draa, and saw stunning sunsets from the crest of giant dunes. The days were pleasantly warm and each night they enjoyed a delicious Moroccan meal including flatbreads cooked in fires beneath the sands. They made friends with their camels - or at least one of them - and stopped at a desert well to take water on board.

Reaching the end of their trek, the adventure continued on their drive back to Marrakesh. Stopping for a night in the town Ouled Berhil they enjoyed the comparative luxury of the Riad Hida - a real taste of old Morocco. On their final day on the road, they crossed the Tizi n'Test pass, bringing Steve back full circle to the place where he'd first set eyes on the Sahara.
