Supporting the people of Nepal

Supporting the people of Nepal

A message from our Managing Director, Steve Berry

Like many of you, everyone at Mountain Kingdoms has been deeply saddened by the devastating floods in Nepal last week. Nepal is a country that means a great deal to us.

We have been taking people there for almost 40 years, and over that time we have built close friendships with our local partners, guides and colleagues. So, when something like this happens, it feels very personal. We had no Mountain Kingdoms clients in the affected area at the time, and I’m very relieved to say that all our local partners and staff are safe.

However, I am very sad to tell you that, a close Sherpa friend, Suneram Tamang, lost his wife and his house in the floods, and I am supporting a fundraising effort for him and his family at this incredibly difficult time. If you would like to contribute to the fund-raising for Suneram and his family please contact me directly – steve@mountainkingdoms.com. I will collect all your donations and will pass the final amount to Suneram via our trustworthy agent in Nepal, who we have worked with for 38 years. You have my word that very penny will reach Suneram.

Mountain Kingdoms has worked with SHIVA Charity for many years and we are also supporting their emergency appeal. SHIVA is providing practical help to families caught up in the floods, sending emergency boxes containing tarpaulins, food, tools and other basic provisions to help people through the immediate aftermath. Mountain Kingdoms has contributed £10,000 to support the flood relief efforts.

If you would like to donate to SHIVA’s emergency appeal, you can do so here:

Nepal has given us so much over the years. At a time like this, it is more important than ever to stand by the people and communities we know and care about. That means supporting those who have been directly affected, but it also means continuing to support Nepal through responsible tourism. The impact of the flooding was, thankfully, very localised and our autumn trekking season is going ahead as planned, bringing much-needed tourism income to the local communities and businesses that depend on it.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected, and especially with Suneram and our friends, colleagues and their families across Nepal.
