Bhutan's National Museum re-opens
Bhutan's National Museum has finally re-opened after nine long years. Housed in the 17th century Ta Dzong, scenically perched above Paro Dzong, the building was damaged in an earthquake in 2011 but has now been restored to its full glory.
Covering seven storeys, the museum holds over 3,000 treasures representing Bhutan's rich cultural and artistic heritage. Highlights include an impressive collection of ancient thangkas featuring Bhutan's important saints and teachers, some fearsome festival masks, a collection of religious statues, some early stone carvings and the original iron links from the nearby Tamchhog Bridge.
A visit to the museum is included in most of our Bhutan holidays. For more information about the restoration project, or to take a virtual tour, visit the museum's website: https://www.nationalmuseum.gov.bt/.
