We were a small group of four (older) people travelling with a brilliant guide. We hit a Slovakian heatwave, so took our walks steadily. Walking through the wild flower meadows on the Mala Fatra ridge was a real pleasure, as was rafting down the Orava river to visit the 13th century castle perched high on a rock. How did they manage all those stairs? Up at the top we admired the guard room, saw the torture chamber placed next to the stateroom, and gasped at the view. Travelling west we also spent a morning in the fairy tale castle at Bojnice, before arriving at Bratislava.
Slovakia really surprised me in the best way. One day I was wandering Bratislava's cobbled streets, enjoying the city's charm, and just a couple of days later I was up in the Mala Fatrá mountains, surrounded by wildflowers, hidden alpine lakes, and jaw-dropping views. What stuck with me the most when I got back home was how overlooked Slovakia is. Sandwiched between Austria and the Czech Republic, it somehow doesn't get the attention it deserves. And honestly, that's part of the magic. The trails are quiet, the towns un-touristy, and the landscapes are basically untouched. It still very much feels like a hidden gem.
