Rebuilding lives in Morocco

In the middle of the night on the 9th September 2023 a devastating earthquake hit the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. One of the country’s worst ever quakes, it killed almost 3,000 people, injured many, many more and destroyed thousands of homes and other buildings.
In the aftermath, we were determined to try and help a country we had close connections with and great fondness for. Rather than just give money to a general fund, we decided to donate several thousand pounds to help re-build a single family home. Our local partners identified the Ait el Maallem family in the remote mountain village of Aghbalou, in the Zat Valley, who’s house had been completely destroyed.
Once the rubble had been cleared the family were able to start to rebuild on the same site but using brick rather than pisé (a more traditional mix of earth, sand and clay) to make the house more earthquake-proof in future. We’re delighted that the house is now well on its way to completion and the Ait el Maalem family, pictured here, can re-build their lives along with their home.
