Introduction

Home of the Ahom Dynasty at (Sibsagar) that arrived from Thailand in the mid 13th century and ruled to varying degrees until the 18th century. The Burmese moved in and took over and ruled with merciless barbarity until the British threw them out from 1824-25. It soon became the heartland of tea production in India, perhaps in the world, and verdant acres on tea garden lie either side of the mighty Brahmaputra for hundreds of miles, beautifully tended around tidy colonial bungalows.
