Zika virus (ZIKV) – what you need to know

ZIKV is a virus that is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. The infection often occurs without symptoms but can cause fever, a rash and conjunctivitis. The condition is usually mild and short-lived. However, the Zika virus can be spread from a pregnant woman to her unborn baby. There have been reports of a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly and other poor pregnancy outcomes in babies of mothers who were infected with the Zika virus while pregnant.The precise link has not yet been established.
