Cultural Tour
First Class Sri Lanka

Duration: 12 Days

Combine your itinerary with your preferred hotels or other accommodation. Take a look at the Accommodation section for ideas and inspiration.

Days 1 - 2 An overnight flight from the UK takes you to Colombo where you are met and driven to your hotel at Katana. We recommend the delightful Village Green Inn close to Negombo Beach. Later you can take a boat ride on the Dutch Canal.
Day 3 Today you drive to Castlereagh Lake in the tea growing central highlands of Sri Lanka. Dotted around the hills and valleys surrounding the picturesque lake are five beautifully restored tea planter bungalows offering the most luxurious accommodation and opportunities for walks, cycling or just lazing around. You will stay at the Castlereagh Bungalow for your first two nights.
Day 4 This morning you make the scenic journey to Nurawa Eliya - Sri Lanka's highest town and a major tea growing area. In colonial times, Nurawa Eliya was a retreat for civil servants escaping the heat of the plains, and became known as Little England. You will be taken on a guided walking tour of the landmark buildings of the town, finishing at the Grand Hotel where you can enjoy high tea on the manicured lawns. Later you return to Castlereagh in time for a pre-dinner cocktail.
Day 5 It's time to move on today, to experience one of the other Tea Trails Bungalows. You can choose whether to make the journey by car or to walk along the plantation trails, meeting tea pickers and observing how they work. This region of Sri Lanka is where the finest and most delicate Ceylon teas are grown and once you have settled in at Norwood Bungalow you will have the opportunity to visit a nearby tea factory. Here you can discover all about how tea is processed and blended and, of course, sample a cup or two.
Days 6 - 7 This morning you leave the cool climes of the hill country and make the long, winding drive down to Yala National Park at the far south of the island. Sri Lanka's premier wildlife park, it is home to vast array of animals and birds including leopards, elephants and flamingos. Accompanied by an expert guide, you will explore the park on morning and afternoon game drives from your base at the super-comfortable Leopard Trails.
Day 8 After an early morning game drive and breakfast, you leave Yala and head east along the main coastal road to the town of Galle. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galle is Sri Lanka's best preserved colonial town enclosed within a series of huge bastions and walls. After checking in to the attractive Galle Fort Bazaar Hotel, situated in the historic heart of Galle Fort, you will enjoy a late afternoon guided walk around the ramparts and narrow streets of the town.
Days 9 - 10 After breakfast and perhaps some last-minute souvenir shopping, you drive further along the coast to the resort of Bentota. Your hotel here is set on a rocky outcrop a few miles from the town and has secluded sandy beaches, stylish villas and excellent facilities. You can now kick back, relax and enjoy some real R&R in this tropical paradise.
Days 11 - 12 You return to Colombo in time to check in at the airport for your overnight flight home.
