The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu with Private Villa

Duration: 10 days

Combine your itinerary with your preferred hotels or other accommodation. Take a look at the Accommodation section for ideas and inspiration.

Days 1-2 After an overnight flight, normally with a change of planes in Lima, you arrive in Cuzco. Here you will be met and driven down into the Sacred Valley, to your own private villa where you will stay for 7 nights. The 'Green House' offers a wonderfully relaxing and tranquil environment with stunning views, lush gardens and a full range of contemporary amenities. You will have your own guide and driver and a chef who will prepare delicious meals for you.
Day 3 After breakfast you will drive to Pisac to visit the artisan market - a colourful, lively place where you may find a souvenir or two. From Pisac you will make a circular walk of about 3 to 4 hours, up to the major Inca ruins above the town. The ruins at Pisac are considered to be one of the finest remaining Inca archaeologic sites anywhere and make a perfect introduction to the many Inca ruins you will see on your trip. Back in town you can visit a traditional bakery to try freshly baked bread or empanadas and learn about the guinea pigs of Peru.
Day 4 Today is another great blend of culture and walking. Firstly you drive up to visit the extensive ruins of Chinchero, a town famous for its fine weavings. You will have the opportunity to see this traditional craft in action as there are various workshops open to the public. Then, from Chinchero you will trek down into the Sacred Valley of the Incas to reach the town of Huayllabamba. Your route will be an original and rarely used Inca trail which is still in pristine condition in many places.
Day 5 In the morning you head up again towards the Chinchero plain and take a dirt road to walk to the incredible ruins of Moray. These rarely visited and enigmatic circular ruins are thought to have been agricultural experimental stations in the times of the Incas. After visiting the ruins you follow an ancient mule trail, enjoying spectacular views of the snow capped Cordillera Vilcanota and seeing examples of traditional Andean farming. You then head back across the plain to the interesting town of Maras where you will have a tasty picnic lunch. After lunch you walk down to visit the amazing Salinas, a series of salt pans that have been worked since Inca times. You will have time to explore this unusual site beore you descend further to the Urubamba river where you vehicle will be waiting to whisk you back to your villa.
Day 6 Today begins with a drive up out of the Sacred Valley to the Inca ruins of Puma Marca which you will have time to explore with your guide. Then you will walk down to Ollantaytambo, a short hike through a a very traditional farming area, following an old Inca trail and a great opportunity to experience both Inca culture and the living culture of Peru today. You may see people plowing with oxen or harvesting by hand, or perhaps just the colorfully dressed locals walking down to town from the communities above, where most still wear traditional clothing. You will follow an old Inca trail down the steeply terraced valley to arrive at Ollantaytambo, with its narrow cobbles streets and fabulous Inca ruins. Later you will visit the organic farm of El Albergue where you will enjoy a traditional Pachamanca lunch.
Day 7 Today is a fabulous day as you walk part of the historic Inca Trail and visit Machu Picchu. You take the early train towards Machu Picchu but alight at Km104 to start the walk up past the interesting ruins at Chachabamba and along an ancient Inca trail, up through tropical cloud forest and high above the roaring Urubamba River. After an initially challenging ascent you reach Wiñay Wayna, a beautiful Inca ruin full of swallows and orchids. You then walk the last spectacular part of the Inca Trail through cloud forest to arrive at Inti Puncu, ‘the Gateway of the Sun’ and your first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Savour the moment before taking an extensive tour of the ruins. You take bus down to Machu Picchu town (also known as Aqua Callientes) where you will catch the train back to the Sacred Valley.
Day 8 It's a free day today. Your guide and driver will be at your disposal for some further sightseeing, or you might just prefer to chill out with a book in the beautiful gardens of your villa.
Day 9 Cuzco is your destination today for some further sightseeing. Firstly you will visit the spectacular ruins of Sacshayhuaman before descending into town for an extensive tour of the colonial city and the Inca remains there. Cuzco is a delightful mountain town with a modern vibe and lots of good cafes, bars and restaurants to tempt you on your last night. We recommend staying at the lovely, well-situated Hotel Antigua, Casona San Blas to end your holiday in real style.
Days 10-11 You will have the morning free in Cuzco for some last minute sightseeing or shopping for souvenirs before you will be taken to the airport for your overnight flight home.
