The best way to discover the beautiful river scenery and village life of Kerala's backwaters is to take an overnight cruise on a riceboat. Built from traditional materials of coir rope and jackwood planks they are also known as kettu vallum. With two or three twin-bedded, en suite cabins, the boats are surprisingly spacious and comfortable. And there is plenty of space on deck to sit, relax and watch the world go by. Guests are well cared for by the small crew including an onboard chef who will prepare delicious Keralan meals with fresh ingredients often being purchased along the way. Longer backwaters cruises are possible on larger, purpose-built boats.
