Variety is most definitely the spice of life in the majestic Himalaya and the autumn months are without doubt one of the best times to experience its many highlights. Celebrated primarily for its incredible diversity of trails that vary from easy-paced treks in the foothills to rugged, high mountain climbs, the Himalaya has so much more to offer the adventurous traveller. You can explore ancient monasteries and forts, visit picture-book villages and stroll through the faded grandeur of colonial hill stations. There are toy trains to ride, wild rivers to raft and fabulous festivals to experience. But, whatever you do and wherever you go you can be assured of the warmest of welcomes from the wonderful Himalayan people who will be delighted to share their beautiful world with you.

With autumn adventures in mind, we have highlighted the diversity of the Himalaya alongside some of our favourite treks, cultural tours and walking holidays in Bhutan, Nepal and the Indian Himalaya. Beautiful Bhutan

The most fascinating of all the Himalayan kingdoms

Supernatural legends, ancient dzongs, traditional dress and vibrant festivals remain at the heart of modern-day Bhutan where the warm-hearted people still live their lives according to time-honoured traditions and deeply held Buddhist beliefs. It is also a land of lush, verdant landscapes and high mountain scenery making it the ideal destination for those who love great walking or trekking combined with fabulous cultural sights.

Time to travel - autumn is considered to be the very best time to visit Bhutan. At this time of the year skies are generally clear with little cloud and rain and the temperatures are lovely and warm; ideal weather for walking or trekking in Bhutan. With the passing of the summer rains, the valleys are lush and verdant and many of Bhutan’s unique species of flora can be seen at their best. Autumn is also the season when the impressive Thimphu Tsechu is held.

Nepal - Everest, Annapurna & Wild Nepal

Nepal is the most exciting of the Himalayan nations, with the highest mountains and vibrant culture

A favourite of adventurers and travellers for many years, Nepal’s appeal remains as strong as ever. Top of many trekker’s wish lists, the classic treks of the Everest and Annapurna regions have rightly retained their popularity. Whilst for those seeking a wilder, more remote Nepal there are numerous opportunities to trek on lesser-known trails, and to discover pristine scenery and an authentic culture little-touched by the outside world.

Time to travel - the post monsoon months of October and November are the peak trekking months, not only in the more popular regions of Everest and the Annapurnas, but also in much of Wild Nepal. These months have pleasant daytime temperatures, good visibility and extended spells of fine weather. It has long been considered the best time to enjoy the magnificent Himalayan views.

Indian Himalaya

The Indian Himalaya really does have lots to offer the keen adventurer

Soaring, snow-capped Himalayan peaks; cool colonial hill stations, spectacular high-desert scenery, crumbling ancient monasteries, charming toy trains and golden, gilded temples are just some of the incredible natural and cultural attractions of the Indian Himalaya. From the Garhwal to Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim to Ladakh there are endless opportunities for adventure whether you prefer gentle walking, remote treks or even the challenge of a trekking peak.

Time to travel - Ladakh has a short tourism season, between July and October. During the summer and early autumn the days are generally dry and bright. A great time to trek in Sikkim is in October and November, as the skies are often clearer after the monsoon rains. In Himachal Pradesh the monsoon normally lasts from mid-June to mid-September. Following the monsoon, the autumn (September to November), is the best time to trek in the region.
