Travel talk 'Georgia to Afghanistan' at our local Arts Festival
The forty forth Wotton Arts Festival will be held from 25th April to 4th May and there will be three musical concerts, an art exhibition, a celebration of St George, talks, and an evening to mark the centenary of the start of WW1.
On Thursday May 1st John Pilkington will tell the tale of his journey - “Georgia to Afghanistan”.
In 2011 John followed a spectacular branch of the Silk Road from the Caucasus across the Caspian Sea to Samarkand. He then turned south-east to explore the High Pamirs of Afghanistan, a region well-known to Marco Polo, before making a dramatic finale at the source of the Oxus in the heart of Central Asia. His stunning photos and entertaining and informative commentary make this an event not to be missed.
John has been called “one of Britain’s greatest tellers of travellers’ tales”. He has given talks to over 1,000 audiences in five countries, and holds the Royal Geographical Society’s Ness Award for popularising geography and the wider understanding of the world.
The talk will be held in The Blue Coat School, Symn Lane, Wotton-under-Edge at 7.30pm. Tickets (£7.00) from The Cotswold Book Room, Long Street, Wotton-under-Edge, or phone 01453 842499. For more details of the Festival visit www.wottonartsfestival.org.uk
