Our grading system explained
Michael Rutland returns to tour leading
Michael Rutland has over 16 years’ experience leading cultural tours in Bhutan for Mountain Kingdoms. Having retired in 2018, he’s happily decided that he’s not yet ready to give up sharing the magic of Bhutan – his adopted home country - and will once again be leading a departure of our Definitive Cultural Tour of Bhutan this November.
Michael’s deep attachment to Bhutan goes back over 45 years to 1971 when he was first appointed science tutor to the 16 year old crown prince. At the time Michael was a school teacher in Oxford and had no idea where Bhutan was. On the map he saw that it had ‘unmapped’ written across much of it, feeling intrigued, he accepted the job, not anticipating how deeply he would fall in love with the country. In addition to being the UK’s Honorary Consul in Bhutan he is also a citizen of the country. He was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to British-Bhutan relations and also holds the Bhutan Coronation Gold Medal. Michael’s long association with Mountain Kingdoms stems from his friendship with our MD, Steve Berry and their joint membership of the Bhutan Society.
Now a full time resident of Bhutan, the immense knowledge, deep passion and cultural insight that Michael brings to his tours is unmatched, and his groups have always left the country feeling an extra special connection with the kingdom. Join him on the 28th November departure of our Definitive Cultural Tour of Bhutan to experience it for yourself.
