Michael Rutland returns to tour leading
Michael Rutland has over 16 years’ experience leading cultural tours in Bhutan for Mountain Kingdoms. Having retired in 2018, he’s happily decided that he’s not yet ready to give up sharing the magic of Bhutan – his adopted home country - and will once again be leading a departure of our Definitive Cultural Tour of Bhutan this November.
Michael’s deep attachment to Bhutan goes back over 45 years to 1971 when he was first appointed science tutor to the 16 year old crown prince. At the time Michael was a school teacher in Oxford and had no idea where Bhutan was. On the map he saw that it had ‘unmapped’ written across much of it, feeling intrigued, he accepted the job, not anticipating how deeply he would fall in love with the country. In addition to being the UK’s Honorary Consul in Bhutan he is also a citizen of the country. He was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to British-Bhutan relations and also holds the Bhutan Coronation Gold Medal. Michael’s long association with Mountain Kingdoms stems from his friendship with our MD, Steve Berry and their joint membership of the Bhutan Society.
Now a full time resident of Bhutan, the immense knowledge, deep passion and cultural insight that Michael brings to his tours is unmatched, and his groups have always left the country feeling an extra special connection with the kingdom. Join him on the 28th November departure of our Definitive Cultural Tour of Bhutan to experience it for yourself.
After the long lockdown, June has seen a very welcome touch of normality return to the Mountain Kingdoms office. Many of you have started thinking about future adventures, and so Niki, Harry, Seraphina and Kirsty have joined our MD, Steve Berry, back in the office to help with all your enquiries.
During the time away we have been walking the trails close to home, making the most of the lovely Cotswold countryside around us, but like you we can’t wait to start exploring further afield again. We have also been busy improving our website, putting together exciting new ideas to add to our inspirational range of holidays and we’re talking to our overseas partners about arrangements to keep you safe on your travels – watch this space!
The events of the last two months show us all how precious the lives of our loved ones really are. The viability of corporations, airlines, banks and even whole economies have been ignored as mankind has come together to defeat this invisible threat. It is a heartening thought isn’t it, that individual lives are more important than money?
At Mountain Kingdoms we are committed to Responsible Tourism and ensuring that all our holidays are undertaken in a way which is socially, environmentally and culturally sound. As part of this commitment we have now joined the Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency initiative.
