Reviews

Excellent trip overall. What I enjoyed: the company, like minded individuals, the leader.
Dr C., Isle of Wight

I have fond memories of rock climbing in the Verdon Gorge when I was in my 20’s. I remember belaying my climbing partner perched on a tiny ledge and looking down into the gorge below thinking “my God that looks nice down there, I must come back and walk through it one day.” It took 40 years to cure that small itch and I can tell you the trek more than lived up to...
Steve Berry, MD

Antoine was excellent - brilliant guide, knowledgeable/assessed the needs of the group. One of the best guides ever.
Miss G, London

The plunging descent down the Imbert stairway, some exciting tunnels and the startling turquoise waters of the Verdon were my personal highlights from walking the gorge.
John Turner, Mountain Kingdoms Trek Leader

Absolutely brilliant. Good value for money, but real benefit is the quality of the guides locally. Antoine was a superb leader, his general knowledge was excellent.

The Grand Canyon du Verdon, as it is sometimes known, attracts visitors to France from all over the world. Most do no more than take in its beauty from one of the many viewpoint but it merits a much closer look!

On this trek we spend six full days trekking from hotel to hotel, exploring the gorge and its surrounds. We trek on a circular route starting and finishing at Castellane. The trails are well maintained and sometimes follow the floor of the gorge, and sometimes head high along the clifftop. The main section of the gorge is about 25kms long with a maximum depth of 700m/2,300ft, and it is an incredibly exciting hike. Each evening we will stop in hamlets laced with Provencal charm, staying in excellent quality boutique hotels. Main luggage is transferred each day by vehicle allowing us to trek with just a light day sack.

A single group transfer is provided each way from/to Nice International Airport.

Like Raoul pictured here, our guides are English-speaking qualified mountain guides. They lead the trek, prepare the picnic lunches, organise the vehicle transfers, navigate the route and help at hotel check-ins. They know the route very well and are great fun to be with.

  1. Day 1 - Fly London to Nice.

Today you will arrive in Nice. A single group transfer will be arranged to drive the 100 km from the airport up into the mountains to Castellane, a drive which takes about two hours.

The town of Castellane is considered to be the starting point for visits to the Verdon Gorge with stunning scenery all around and the Verdon River flowing by just outside of town. It is a lovely traditional town with narrow streets and a pretty main square with the town being overlooked by a towering rock of limestone topped by a pretty little chapel, the Notre Dame du Roc. You will stay at a charming hotel located right in the centre of town.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Du Commerce or Similar, Castellane
  2. Day 2 - Drive to Robion, trek to Trigance, 790m/2,592ft - 4½ hours.

Short transfer by mini bus to the charming village of Robion. From here it is a gentle walk up to the Basse de la Douse, 1,151m/3,776ft. You now drop down through the Faye du Bourget Forest and near the bottom cross the D955 to regain the original track crossing the Jabron River by the attractive footbridge of Carajuan, which spans a deep narrow gorge. Very pretty! From here it is 40 mins steady uphill walk to the village of Trigance. You see the castle above the village long before the village itself.

    10 kms. Ascent 300m, descent 600m.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Le Vieil Amandier or Similar, Trigance
  3. Day 3 - Trek to the Belvedere de Rancoumas and descend to the Verdon River below Rougan. Continue to Point Sublime - 6-7 hours.

Today you have another spectacular day's walking. Leaving Trigance you climb beneath the beautiful cliffs of the Serrière du Preil and up to the basin in which is nestled the tiny hamlet of Entreverges. There is no road to this remote hamlet and it is only occupied in the summer months. It will take around two hours to get here. You continue along this trail and then walk out to the Belvédère de Rancoumas at 980m/3,215ft from where there are tremendous views of the Grand Canyon of the Verdon and of the Escalés Cliffs opposite. From Rancoumas you descend to the bottom of the gorge where you cross the river by the pretty arched Tousset bridge and then climb up to your accommodation for the night, the pretty Auberge du Point Sublime, 796m/2,611ft. You might like a swim in the river at the Tousset bridge. You will then take a short taxi to your hotel.

    16kms. Ascent 740m, descent 560m.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Le Provence or Similar, La Palud
  4. Day 4 - Walk the Martel Path from La Maline to Point Sublime - 7-8 hours.

This is possibly the most spectacular day of the trip! Today you transfer in the minibus to La Maline to walk the Sentier Martel, named for a French speleologist, Édouard-Alfred Martel, who in the 1920's surveyed this river with a view to developing the gorge for purposes of generating electricity, which happily did not happen. It is an adventurous day's walking ending by going through a couple of tunnels (remember to bring a headtorch and a warm jacket for the dark, chilly interior!). The Martel Trail winds its way along the canyon, sometimes right down by the river and at other times taking you on an airy path high above the river, but always giving you fabulous views. At one point you have to descend a steep metal staircase alongside the cliff face. Finally you climb on a zig zag path out of the gorge and up to Point Sublime. From there you will drive the short way to the village of La Palud where you will spend two nights. On arrival you may relax with a beer on the sunny terrace of the hotel reflecting on a good days walk.

    14kms. Ascent 600m, descent 710m.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Le Provence or Similar, La Palud
  5. Day 5 - Walk the Sentier Bastidon and then to Bardin Mountain - 7 hours.

Today you have a spectacular circular walk out of La Palud. Firstly you make the short drive back down to La Maline where you started your walk yesterday and begin today walking high above the river, with various impressive viewpoints along the way. Taking the Sentier Bastidon, a spectacular route, at times your views are over 700m down into the gorge. The last viewpoint you reach is the Maireste viewpoint and then you turn away from the gorge and hike to the Grinhan ravine and then up into the uplands above La Palud. You turn back towards La Palud and walk through wonderful forest of pine and beech beneath the summit of Cime de Barbin and then make the long descent back to La Palud village.

    16kms. Ascent 600m Descent 560m

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Le Provence or Similar, La Palud
  6. Day 6 - Trek to Mourre de Chanier, 1,930m/6,332ft - 7-8 hours.

Today you will be walking in back country away from the gorge and away from it all! A brief transfer by road brings to the hamlet of Chauvets where you start your walk. You will climb to the summit of Mourre de Chanier, at 1,930m the highest summit in the area. From there you have fabulous views south to the Verdon Gorge and north to the southern Alps. From here you can also see the observatory of Mont Chiran, 1,905m/6,250ft. Wave after wave of mountains disappearing into the heat haze. On a clear day you can also see the peaks of the Haute Savoir and the Cevennes. Descending from the summit you cross a ridge and then down to the Prau plain and the southern edge of the Suech plateau. You descend further to the little stone village of Rougon and on down to Point Sublime and your hotel for the night.

    Ascent 860m, descent 970m.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Auberge Du Point Sublime or Similar
  7. Day 7 - Trek Point Sublime/Rougon to Chasteuil. Drive to Castellane - 4½ hours.

Today, your last day's walking is a fine hike with good views and much of the walking on an old Roman road. Initially you climb back up to Rougon which you saw briefly on your descent yesterday. This is a lovely small village with some good stone houses and a ruined castle. This village is the centre of a scheme to reintroduce Griffon vultures to the Verdon area so with some luck you may get to see some. Leaving the village you climb up to the Suech Plateau which you cross to the ruins of an old farmstead and then descend through woods to reach the pretty little village of Chasteuil.

Chasteuil was apparently abandoned in the aftermath of the 2nd World War, and reoccupied by a group of hippies in the 1960's. They restored the buildings and formed a commune. They still live there to this day with their children and grandchildren. You are asked to respect their peace and quiet. From here it is a short transfer back to Castellane and a celebration of a fine achievement.

    10kms. Ascent 370m, descent 530m.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Du Commerce or Similar, Castellane
  8. Day 8 - Transfer to airport for flight back to London.

After breakfast there will be a single transfer to Nice airport which is timed to fit the group flight. Please check with the office for details.
