Enjoying a year round temperate climate, almost untouched by mass tourism and criss-crossed by a network of well-maintained paths, La Palma is a superb destination for walkers particularly in the winter months.
This holiday allows you to explore the many delights of the island and take in the diverse terrain from the verdant north of the island, across the high peaks of the central caldera to the raw, newly formed, landscape in the south.

Known as La Isla Bonita, or “pretty island” in Spanish, La Palma was declared a Unesco Biosphere Reserve in 2002 due to its immensely varied landscapes and habitats. Despite its relatively small size, you will enjoy walking along rocky coastal paths, up volcanic peaks, through dense laurel and pine forests, onto sandy beaches and into misty cloud forest. The rich volcanic soil of the island is heavily cultivated and the island folk take great pride in the quality of their fruit and vegetables. Banana plantations are prevalent in the fertile north whilst grape vines also thrive in the ideal conditions. The wine is of exceptional quality and you will have ample opportunity to try a glass or two whilst enjoying delicious evening meals in authentic Spanish restaurants.

Your week long holiday begins with a classic walk amid the tunnels and springs of the Biosphere reserve of Los Tilos before following the coastal way for a day on a delightful hike through villages, orchards and plantations. Next you head to the stunning Caldera de Taburiente National Park and the charming town of Llanos de Aridane where you are based for three nights. Your walks in the park start at the highest point on the island, Roque de los Muchachos, where the mountainous landscape is home to a vast observatory that sits high above the clouds. On a clear day it offers expansive views as far as Mount Teide on Tenerife. From high mountain peaks to deep valley floor you will explore the incredible scenery of the park including the Ruta de los Volcanoes – a celebrated walk along the volcanic spine of the island that descends to the newly formed southern tip of La Palma where you will discover salt pans and black sand beaches.

Finally, your holiday ends in the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, with time to wander the attractive streets of the picturesque old town with its colourful architecture, cobbled streets and appealing Latin American vibe.

Our North to South La Palma holiday will be led by a very experienced and qualified Spanish Mountain guide who speaks excellent English.

Guides include, Jose Antonio Uña, a professional mountain guide whose passions are walking, climbing and ski touring.

  1. Day 1 - Fly London To Santa Cruz De La Palma

There is a single, timed group transfer from the airport to your hotel near Santa Cruz de la Palma.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hacienda San Jorge, Los Cancajos or Similar
  2. Day 2 - The Marcos and Cordero River Springs walk - 6 hours.

This morning you'll have a 30 minute drive from Santa Cruz to reach a twisting, bumpy track that takes you through the Biosphere Reserve of Los Tilos to Casa del Monte where you start your first day's walk. The trail winds through Canary pines and laurels following the man made canal that takes drinking and irrigation water to Santa Cruz. It is a similar experience to walking the levadas in Madeira. There are 13 tunnels, some over 100 metres in length to negotiate before arriving at the first spring after 1.5 hours. A further half an hour climb takes you to the second spring and a good point to stop for lunch. From here you start your descent including a 30 minute stretch down a rocky river bed and the option of a 10 minute detour to an observation point with spectacular views of the gorge. The walk finishes with a descent through cool Linden trees to the car park from where you will be transferred to your hotel in Barlovento, a short drive of around 20 minutes.

Before dinner there will be time for you to enjoy the lovely hotel gardens or take a dip in the indoor or outdoor swimming pools.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel La Palma Romantica or Similar, Barlovento
  3. Day 3 - Walk the GR130 coastal way from Barlovento to Franceses – 5-6 hours.

Today's walk starts from the hotel and follows the GR130 as it winds down towards the coast. The GR130 is a long distance walking path that circles the entire island of La Palma and your walk today is one of the most scenic sections of the entire route.

Leaving Barlovento behind, you descend into a stand of impressive Drago, or dragon trees in the hamlet of La Tosca. Continuing, your path takes you along three small river gorges, or barrancos, then a larger more spectacular one as you approach the small village of Gallegos about three hours into the walk. From Gallegos you head down through small plantations of bananas, yams, almonds and mirabelles before reaching another stunning, rocky barranco filled with cacti and rock roses that leads down into the sea. Choughs are often sighted in this area. The path eventually climbs back up the side of the barranco leading you into the village of Franceses from where a short drive takes you back to your hotel. It may be possible to extend the walk by a couple of hours to reach the village of Tablado if your group is keen to continue.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel La Palma Romantica or Similar, Barlovento
  4. Day 4 - Hike the Caldera de Taburiente Ridge – 5-6 hours.

An early start is recommended today for one of the highlights of the week. A one hour transfer takes you to the highest point on the island, Roque de los Muchachos, at 2,426m/7,959ft. La Palma is renowned as a Dark Skies destination and here the landscape is dominated by the 15 telescopes that sit high above the clouds and comprise the European Northern Astrophysics Observatory. The scenery is breathtaking as you look across a sea of clouds at the peaks that comprise the crater of Taburiente. In the far distance, it is even possible to see the peak of Mount Teide on Tenerife 80 miles away - as long as the weather is clear of course.

You are now in the heart of La Palma amidst its most dramatic, volcanic landscape. The trail follows the ridge of the Caldera de Taburiente on good paths through a landscape of incredible basalt peaks dotted with broom and scabious. Ravens, kestrels and choughs can be viewed hunting in the void beneath you. Your route takes you to four peaks before arriving at Pico de La Nieve at 2,100m/6,890ft. From here you descend through pine forests to meet the road from where the drive to Los Llanos takes about an hour.

Your hotel tonight, the Benahoare has a lovely rooftop terrace where you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink or take a dip in the plunge pool.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Benahoare r Similar, Llanos de Aridane
  5. Day 5 - Caldera de Taburiente National Park – 6 hours.

After breakfast a 45 minute drive up a winding road takes you to the start of today's walk at Brecitos, deep inside the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. As you look up, you will see the peaks that you walked yesterday. Today's path descends gently through Canary pines and after two hours you reach a camp site, information centre and toilets that mark the head of the impressive Gorge of Las Angustias. A steep zig-zag descent takes you down the steep sides of the gorge and then follows a river and its picturesque waterfalls along its floor. As the 'yellow' river joins a stream you may witness the curious mixing of colours. The path continues to follow the river bed for a further two hours where there are plenty of places to stop for lunch and dip your toes in the cool water. On reaching the end of the walk there is a 15 minute transfer back to Los Llanos.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Benahoare r Similar, Llanos de Aridane
  6. Day 6 - The Volcanoes Route – 6-7 hours.

A half hour transfer this morning takes you to El Pilar recreation area where you start your walk on the GR131 along the spine of the island. Known as the 'Ruta de los Volcanoes', this is the main path that runs from north to south, from the caldera down to the sea, and will give fantastic views of both sides of the island.

To begin with you climb steadily through pines and then reach more open areas of lava fields and pines that have been blackened by fire. Here the Canarian pines show their remarkable ability to regenerate after being burnt. Finally you reach one of the craters of Hoyo Negro and from here it is possible to detour to the peak of Nambroque at 1,922m/6,306ft. The trail continues south passing the craters of Duraznero and Deseades from where you can see the rest of the volcanoes and the sea. The path descends to the town of Fuencaliente, a 30 minute drive from Los Llanos.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Benahoare r Similar, Llanos de Aridane
  7. Day 7 - San Antonio Volcano and Salt flats of Fuencaliente - 3 hours.

Today, a short 30 transfer back to Fuencaliente allows you to pick up the trail from yesterday. This area is an important wine making region and the vineyards can be seen on the coastal slopes. Here you see the volcanoes of San Antonio and Teneguia and witness the stark, beautiful landscape formed by the recent volcanic activity in 1971. It is a reminder of the incredible geology of La Palma and the Canary Islands.

The path descends to the sea and the striped lighthouse at the southernmost tip of the island where the dazzling patterns of the salt pans and the deep blue sea contrast spectacularly with the black volcanic rock. This is a shorter walk today so you will have time to relax in the small bay of Punta de Fuencaliente and maybe take a cooling dip in the sea. When you are ready to head off, the transfer from the bay to Los Cancajos takes about an hour.

Overnight iconOvernight: Hacienda San Jorge, Los Cancajos or Similar
  8. Day 8 - Free morning before transfer to the airport for your flight home to London.

After breakfast, the morning is free either to relax around the hotel pool or head into picturesque Santa Cruz to explore its delightful streets and get a feel of its attractive Latin vibe. We recommend taking a stroll along the Avenida Maritima to look at the flower-filled, wooden balconies on the colourful colonial buildings that line the road.

A single, timed, group transfer to La Palma airport will be organised from your hotel for the flight back to the UK.
