Reviews

Northern Norway in winter truly is a magical winter wonderland. I was lucky enough to see the northern lights three nights running and they really do dance across the sky! Driving the husky team was the icing on the cake.

Follow the call of the wild and hunt for the aurora borealis on foot, dog-sled and reindeer on this long weekend in the far north of Norway. You will experience the silent beauty of the Finnmark plateau, a vast, untouched wilderness with pristine forest and centuries of tradition, home to the indigenous Sami people and their reindeer herds. Here the Arctic winter is all about snow, ice and wide open skies which offer spectacular viewing when the northern lights dance across them. This part of Northern Norway, over 230 miles north of the Arctic Circle, is undoubtedly one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis, due to the stable climate, superbly clear air and low levels of light pollution.

Your adventure begins when you fly into the Arctic town of Alta, the first place in the world to have an observatory dedicated to studying the Aurora Borealis, built here in 1899. After exploring the small town you head out after dinner on a winter walk - your first hunt for the northern lights. The following morning is spent snow-shoeing through peaceful pine forests, under the sparkling white peaks of the Finnmark plateau. There will be a chance to try your hand at ice fishing before heading off to meet the hosts for your two-day husky-sledding adventure. You will take a short trial run in the afternoon to learn how to control the dogs and sled, and then spend the night in comfortable accommodations at the dogsled lodge on the banks of the Alta River. In the morning, you will be ready to pack up and head to the wilderness.

Once you’ve mastered the basics of mushing, you’ll be off into the dazzling Arctic wilderness, driving your dog team along the frozen river valley and up onto the beautiful Finnmarksvidda. Tonight you’ll sleep in a simple but cosy wilderness lodge whilst, with luck, the northern lights dance overhead. During the husky sledding you will be responsible for feeding and caring for your hard working dogs and will no doubt build up quite a bond with them by the end of the trip. As you’ll be sharing the driving of your sled there’s also time to sit back, enjoy the ride and take in the magical Arctic landscapes. Another day of sledding follows, then you must reluctantly bid your huskies farewell, and transfer to the Igloo Ice Hotel at Sorrisniva for your final unforgettable night. This remarkable structure is carved entirely out of ice each autumn and melts in the spring. After a delicious dinner you meet local Sami herders with their reindeer, and with a final chance to aurora gaze, sled along the frozen river to join them for local delicacies and storytelling around the fire.

Husky Sledding & Northern Lights Adventure Itinerary

  1. Day 1 - Fly From London To Alta, Norway.

On arrival at Alta there will be a group transfer to the Scandic Hotel.

Alta in mid-winter is permanently snow-covered and it is fascinating to see how this remote settlement, the largest in Finnmark, functions. After an afternoon sightseeing including visiting the ultra modern Northern Lights Cathedral, and an early dinner in town, you set off for your first northern lights hunt on foot. By early February the days of permanent darkness are over, and it is the perfect time to see the Aurora Borealis. You will walk about 3 miles down to the edge of the 24 mile long fjord to an excellent viewpoint. Here there will be time to aurora gaze, weather permitting, and then enjoy a snack around the fire before returning to your hotel around midnight.

Overnight iconOvernight: Scandic Hotel Or Similar, Alta
  2. Day 2 - Snow shoeing and ice fishing in the morning. Afternoon transfer to Husky Lodge, meet dog teams and practice sledding.

After breakfast it is time for your snow-shoeing adventure. All equipment is provided for you, and after some instruction you will set off into the wilderness with your guide, at a gentle pace. After a morning walking through the tranquil winter woodland along the banks of the Alta river, you will stop for lunch. For anyone who wishes to, there is the chance to try ice fishing. After returning to base, you will transfer to the dog sledding centre and meet the huskies who will lead you into the wilderness tomorrow. Your afternoon arrival gives you a chance to get acquainted with the dogs and take a short practice run through the nearby forest to learn how to control the dogs and the sled.

Your accommodation overnight is at Holmen Husky Lodge, the hosts for your sledding adventure. The lodge is a converted farmstead that now includes comfortable common rooms, a dining area, sauna and outdoor Jacuzzi, all strategically placed around the main husky dog yard. You will stay in special tipi cabins with a double bed, electric blankets and a wood stove. One part of the tent cabin is a floor-to-ceiling window so that you can lie in bed and look out at the night sky. If the aurora dances overhead, it's a cosy place to watch!

  3. Day 3 - Husky sledding.

This morning you will join your guides who will take you to the equipment store to be fitted and issued with your warm thermal suit and boots. You will help prepare the dogs and sleds for the trip, and with everything in good order you will be on your way into the wild arctic land.

The route today will take you through beautiful forest scenery, initially along a river before climbing onto the Finnmark mountain plateau and across frozen lakes. Your trusted dogs will do most of the work although you will occasionally have to help them up hill. As the sledding is shared, you will take it in turns to both drive the dogs and to ride on the sled, giving you the chance to sit back and enjoy the stunning Arctic landscape. Lunch will be prepared en route by your guide. On arrival at the wilderness lodge in the late afternoon you will be shown how to de-harness, and tend to your dog team. You will then have time to relax, and perhaps enjoy a sauna, before dinner in the cosy dining room.

Your wilderness lodge, Suolovuopmi Fjellstue, was established in the early 19th century as one of a series of lodges built to provide shelter for the officials of the region, sheriff, doctor, priest, as they travelled between the far-flung Finnmark communities they tended. Some buildings from the original lodge remain, dating back to 1878. The lodge is managed by an oppsitter, a position which is inherited, and the oppsitters' family also live in the lodge.

After dinner you are in the perfect spot to enjoy the northern lights, weather permitting.

  4. Day 4 - Husky sledding. Transfer to the Igloo Ice Hotel. Evening reindeer ride.

After another delicious breakfast you will attend to the dogs, pack up the sleds, tidy the lodge and set off for another day sledding. Depending on weather conditions, your guide will decide the route and again you will be sledding through forests and over frozen lakes with lunch prepared over an open fire. After sledding back to base, you will say a sad farewell to your dog team.

It's a short transfer to the Igloo Ice Hotel. This remarkable structure is re-built every autumn and different artists are invited to create amazing ice-sculptures inside the hotel. Warm sleeping bags and reindeer hides are provided to keep you warm overnight and the hotel also has an ice bar. After dinner you will have your final chance to search for the northern lights on an exciting reindeer ride through the frozen forest. Local Sami reindeer herders will welcome you to their lavvo (tent), where you will have the chance to sit around the fire and to talk to them about their traditional way of life. As you sled back to the hotel, lie back and gaze up at the Arctic night sky for the last time.

Overnight iconOvernight: Igloo Ice Hotel, Sorrisniva
  5. Day 5 - Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

After a warming sauna and breakfast there will be a group transfer back to Alta airport for the flight home.
