This video shows highlights from our 2013 Island Peak trekking expedition and was filmed by Mountain Kingdoms trek leader Ed Russell.
We follow the group on their acclimatisation trek towards Everest Base Camp, gradually ascending from picturesque valleys to high mountain trails, crossing bridges bedecked with prayer flags and enjoying tea breaks and nightly stops at tea houses. The well-trodden path passes through the lively Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar and also Thyangboche Monastery from where there are superb views of Everest. As the group approaches Everest there is the choice to trek on to Base Camp at the foot of the world’s highest mountain or to hike up the small peak called Kala Pattar which gives incredible panoramic views of the entire Everest range.
Leaving Everest behind, a further two days trekking take the group to the Base Camp from where they make their summit attempt on Island Peak. Led by a highly experienced Sherpa guide and using ropes, ice-axes and crampons on the technical trekking peak, the group slowly climb to the summit. The panoramic views and sheer exhilaration of reaching the top make all the hard work worthwhile.
Returning to Kathmandu, there’s time for some last minute sightseeing and shopping and to celebrate the achievement of a lifetime.
