Trek through the remote Vilcabamba region, from Machu Picchu to its ‘Sacred Sister’.
Our ultimate objective is the magical
Inca site of Choquequirao, where a visit
today is considered to offer the same
experience as that of visiting Machu Picchu in 1915. Many routes to Choquequirao start with a gruelling ascent but we avoid this by starting from Vitcos, the old capital of the Incas in exile. Firstly though we visit the Sacred Valley and take the train to explore magnificent Machu Picchu. With benefit of our acclimatisation we now begin our trek through the Cordillera Vilcabamba, a region of towering snow capped peaks, high mountain passes and hot tropical valleys. The Condor City of Choquequirao is located high on a ridge at almost 1,750m/5,775ft
and our two nights camping on the terraces or
nearby ruins here, is a fitting climax to a truly exceptional trip.
