Reviews

I loved the Tea Trail Bungalows. These genuine colonial bungalows offer something completely different to staying in a hotel. I was very well looked after by what felt like my own staff, and nothing was too much trouble. I could happily have stayed here the rest of my life.

With its relaxed pace and stylish accommodation this holiday is a wonderful introduction to some of Sri Lanka’s natural and historic attractions. We start our journey in the atmospheric Southern Highlands where we stay in the Ceylon Tea Trails colonial-era bungalows, now converted into award winning resorts full of modern day touches of comfort. We explore the picturesque tea estates and take high tea at the Grand Hotel.

Next we travel to Yala National Park, Sri Lanka’s premier wildlife reserve, where we look for leopards and elephants whilst staying in a luxury tented camp. From Yala we travel west to the lovingly restored French colonial town of Galle to stroll along the impressive ramparts of the fort and wander the narrow, winding streets of the old town. Our holiday ends with a taste of paradise as we relax by the Indian Ocean in a fabulous boutique beach resort.

  1. Day 1 - Fly London To Colombo

Depart London by overnight flight for Colombo.

    Overnight iconOvernight: In flight
  2. Day 2 - Arrive Colombo, drive to Katana (30-45 minutes). Dutch canal boat trip.

Arrive in Colombo where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The beautiful boutique hotel is set in a lovely garden a short drive from the popular Negombo Beach area. The rooms are very comfortable and there is a swimming pool in the lush gardens to cool you down after your long flight. Later in the afternoon you will be taken on a boat trip along the old 'Dutch' or Hamilton Canal, where you will drift along enjoying the old buildings, fishing villages, mangroves and slow pace of life of the fishermen working on the water. If lucky you might also spot water monitors and of course numerous birds. The canal was formerly a major conduit for the Dutch trade in this area (hence its name). It heads directly north as far as the town of Puttalam, in total 120km from Colombo.

  3. Day 3 - Drive to Hatton area (approximately 5 hours). Stay in luxury tea trails bungalow.

This morning you will drive to Hatton with some sightseeing along the way. For film buffs there will be an exciting stop along the Kelani River at Kitulgala where Bridge over the River Kwai was actually filmed. Sadly only the concrete foundations of the bridge remain and the beautiful river is now more commonly visited as a popular spot for white water rafting.

You arrive at your first bungalow of the Ceylon Tea Trails Estate in the early afternoon and settle into your colonial era accommodation. This is the world's first tea bungalow resort, situated at a refreshing altitude of 1,250m in a region renowned for its premium quality Ceylon tea. The award winning resort consists of five bungalows situated around the Castlereagh Reservoir in the Bogawantalawa Valley. Originally built for British tea managers during the Raj, they now offer modern comforts with a dash of style, great food and excellent service, without losing their sense of history. They are all fitted out in colonial style with splendid views, swimming pools, in-room spa treatments and are set in beautiful grounds. Each unique bungalow has its own manager, chef, butler and 'house boys' to make your stay comfortable and memorable.

There are lovely walks between the bungalows through the beautiful landscape and you are encouraged to visit the other bungalows you are not staying at, perhaps to take afternoon tea, a cocktail or just to enjoy the breath-taking backdrop of forests, mountains, lakes and waterfalls. There are bicycles available if you fancy cycling around the trails, and guides at your disposal if you would prefer to be shown the way.

Overnight iconOvernight: Castlereagh Tea Trails Bungalow (Garden Suite)
  4. Day 4 - Train ride to Nuwara Eliya. Guided walk and tea at the Grand Hotel.
first class sri lanka train through hatton tea plantations.

Today you will take a train from Hatton to Nanoya (approx. 1 hour) and then a short transfer (5km) to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's highest town, situated at 1,868m. The town is often referred to as 'Little England' as it was established by the British in the nineteenth century and soon became a retreat for British civil servants seeking to escape from the heat of the plains. The city is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka and there are a number of British era landmarks. This lends some parts of the town an oddly British air. You will, on arrival be taken on a guided walking tour of the town, including the golf course. In the centre of town stands the Grand Hotel, an iconic period building in half timbered style, which is over a century old. An elegant high tea is offered on the beautiful manicured lawns or in the fabulously decorated Tea Lounge if the weather is inclement. Later in the afternoon you will have a private transfer back to your bungalow (approx. 2hours drive) in time for a pre-dinner sundowner cocktail.

Overnight iconOvernight: Castlereagh Tea Trails Bungalow (Garden Suite)
  5. Day 5 - Walk (optional) or drive between bungalows. 12km
first class sri lanka norwood bungalow hatton.

Time to move on and experience one of the other Ceylon Tea Trails Estate bungalows. After breakfast your bags will be transported for you whilst you take the easy walk of around 12km along the tea plantation trails, maybe meeting tea pickers and seeing how they work. If you do not wish to walk there will be a vehicle available to transfer you. During your stay here you will have the opportunity to visit a tea factory with a guided tour by a tea planter. Here you can discover all about tea, the skills of tea blending and of course tasting.

Overnight iconOvernight: Norwood Tea Trails Bungalow (Garden Suite)
  6. Day 6 - Drive to Yala National Park (approximately 6 hours). Evening game drive.

Today you leave the Bogawantalawa Valley and travel through the picturesque southern hill country and down to the far south of the island and the coast. The south, is in many ways Sri Lanka at its most traditional, the distance from the north has protected it from outside influences on its culture. You will stop during your journey at both Ella and Wellawaya in order to stretch your legs and have lunch before reaching the coast and Yala National Park.

This National Park is perhaps Sri Lanka's best-known spot for wildlife viewing. Covering around 130,000 hectares it covers a wide range of vegetation zones including monsoon forest, grassland, fresh water and marine wetlands, and sandy beaches. These habitats support an equally diverse range of flora and fauna and on your morning and evening safari drives here you may be able to see elephants, deer, wild buffalo, crocodile and some of the more than 120 species of birds including, Lesser Flamingos and Paradise Flycatchers. Yala is considered one of the world's premier parks for seeing leopard, as these normally elusive cats have grown quite accustomed to the safari jeeps that criss-cross the park. On an early morning or early evening drive you therefore have quite a good chance of spotting a leopard on the dirt trails or sitting atop a rocky outcrop.

This evening you will have your first game drive into the park. Drives are conducted in 4WD vehicles that have been specially adapted for safari use with comfy seats, pockets to stow your gear and bean bags to steady your camera for those all important photos. Drives can last anywhere from 2 to 4 hours depending on what's seen and how long everyone wants to stay out. The safaris are designed to showcase the diversity of wildlife that Yala has to offer. One lesser known feature of the park is the density of Mugger crocodiles and the safari guides will do their best, using their extensive experience, to try and secure sightings for you. At the end of the Northeast Monsoon (February), the park is also very good for butterflies.

  7. Day 7 - Morning game drive.
first class sri lanka sloth bear yala national park game drive.

This morning you will have a second game drive, leaving early when viewing is at its best and before the heat builds up. You will return to camp for a delicious al fresco breakfast and then you will than have the rest of the day to relax and enjoy your surroundings. There is a library at the camp with many wildlife books to browse and the naturalists will be around to answer any questions you might have.

Overnight iconOvernight: Leopard Trails Luxury Camp, Yala Or Similar
  8. Day 8 - Drive to Galle Fort (approximately 5 hours).

After breakfast you will head out along the main coast road (perched on the coast close to the islands southern most point) following the shoreline westward via Hambantota, Tangalle and Matara to the town of Galle. This fortified Portuguese/Dutch port is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is Sri Lanka's best preserved colonial town enclosed within a series of huge bastions which now guard the area from modernisation, as they once guarded from invasion. Walking along the walled ramparts and through the narrow streets makes for a really pleasant morning or evening stroll. Galle is a popular spot for visiting tourists and within the old low rise, Dutch period villas you will find many shops, as well as cafes, bars, small hotels and guesthouses. You will doubtless be tempted to pick up some nice souvenirs or presents to take home.

Upon arrival you will have time to check in to your hotel before a late afternoon guided walk around this lovely old town.

Overnight iconOvernight: Galle Fort Bazaar, Galle Or Similar
  9. Day 9 - Drive to Bentota (approximately 1 ½ - 2 hours)

This morning you can, if you choose, get up early and take a stroll around the walls of the old fort whilst it is still cool before returning to the hotel for breakfast and then the drive up to Bentota. You will have lunch en route and arrive at your beachside hotel in the early afternoon. Bentota sits on the east coast, south of Colombo. Your hotel is situated on a rocky outcrop a few miles south of the town with beautiful secluded sandy beaches stretching north and south. Each room is traditionally styled and equipped with all modern facilities, making them very comfortable. You can now kick back and enjoy some real R & R in this fabulous tropical location.

Overnight iconOvernight: Saman Villa, Bentota Or Similar
  10. Day 10 - Transfer to airport. Fly Colombo to London.

Depending on your flight time you might be able to take an early stroll along the beach or dip in the pool before breakfast and your journey home. You will be transferred to the airport, a drive of around 2 ½ - 3 hours, for your flight.

    Overnight iconOvernight: In Flight
  11. Day 11 - Arrive UK

Today you will arrive back in the UK.
