Our new cycling holiday in Nepal adds an exciting perspective to visiting this most celebrated of Himalayan nations. From Kathmandu, the picturesque hilltop resorts of Nagarkot, Dhulikhel and Namo Buddha lie within easy reach of the keen cyclist, and the fabulous mountain views they are famed for seem all the more rewarding for having arrived there under our own pedal power. We’ll also ride to the cultural and architectural gem of Bhaktapur and take the long road across the Terrai to the wildlife-rich haven of Chitwan National Park. Here we’ll have a full day to enjoy a variety of wildlife watching activities including a walking safari and canoe ride.

This two-wheeled adventure though is as much about the journey as the destinations. On our good quality mountain bikes, with support vehicle behind, we’ll enjoy varied and constantly changing scenery with twisting hills climbs and exhilarating descents on mountain roads. And with the exception of one drive, we’ll be cycling every thrilling mile of the way.

Leader: Local Cycling Leader, Nepal
Local Cycling Leader, Nepal

This cycling trip will be led by an experienced English-speaking Nepalese guide. He will have an intimate and expert knowledge of the culture and nature of Nepal, and will accompany you throughout the trip. He will brief you on the daily activities, and help with checking you in to all the hotels. He will be on hand to do any running repairs to your bike if necessary.

  1. Day 1 - Fly London To Kathmandu
    Fly overnight London to Kathmandu.
    Overnight iconOvernight: In flight
  2. Day 2 - ARRIVE KATHMANDU
You will be met on arrival and transferred to your hotel. You might like to venture out to Thamel for your evening meal, or eat in the hotel restaurant if you are tired from your journey.
Overnight iconOvernight: Shangri La Hotel, Kathmandu Or Similar
  3. Day 3 - CYCLE FROM KATHMANDU TO BHAKTAPUR AND ON TO NAGARKOT 2195M. 35 KM, 883M ASCENT
You leave the Shangrila Hotel and bike out of the city on fairly major wide roads, taking care as you negotiate the traffic. You pass the BICC Hall Parliament building at Bareshoor, the Supreme Court, and a large park for the army and local people at Tudikhel, where a temporary camp was established after the earthquake in 2015. It's pretty flat all the way to Bhaktapur and the 16 km ride should take about an hour. You'll have a guided tour of Bhaktapur with its intricately carved temples, pagodas and shrines, a place of worship for Hindus and Buddhists alike.

After lunch you begin your lung-busting 19 km climb to Nagarkot. It's fairly flat for the first 5-10 minutes and then you begin your ascent on a zig-zag road. You'll have a few hydration stops en route to give the legs and lungs a breather. You pass small villages and head up close to the Bageshwari Reserve Forest, until you reach Nagarkot. The road is quite narrow and there's not too much traffic, so it's very pleasant cycling with good views of the surrounding hills. Nagarkot is famed for its sunrise views of snow-capped summits of the eastern Himalaya, including Mt. Everest. Situated at 2195m, its hilltop position affords lovely views of terraced fields and farmhouses and the spectacular Himalaya. It has little traffic so is a quiet haven from the noise and pollution of the city.
Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Country Villa, Nagarkot Or Similar
  4. Day 4 - CYCLE FROM NAGARKOT TO DHULIKHEL AND ON TO NAMO BUDDHA 1750M. 48 KM, 1219M ASCENT
You begin with a challenging ascent to the view tower at Nagarkot's highest point, for 3 km. You then enjoy a glorious free-wheeling descent, passing small villages, until a tea stop approximately 17 km from the tower. The road then undulates for a while until you hit the main road to Banepa. It's a further 3 km from Banepa to Dhulikhel, mainly uphill. You'll have lunch at the Himalaya Horizon hotel, having a well-earned rest from a fairly tough morning. If not hazy, there are fantastic views of the Himalaya including Langtang and Shishapangma from the terrace. From Dhulikhel, it's 12 km and 2000 ft of climbing to Namo Buddha Resort. The last half an hour or so is on a dirt road. Namo Buddha Resort is in a wonderful hillside location surrounded by forest, with fabulous views. The rooms are all individual cottages oozing charm and character. The food and hospitality here are excellent. The food comes from their organic farm, with dairy products from their cows, home-made jam with their own fruit and freshly baked German sour-bread. You will be served a mouth-watering three course meal in the evening.

In the afternoon, you will visit the monastery. It's a 45 minute walk from your resort. Namo Buddha is a sacred pilgrimage site and Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery is home to more than 250 monks and includes a college and school for monks and a Tibetan medical clinic.
Overnight iconOvernight: Namo Buddha Resort, Namo Buddha Or Similar
  5. Day 5 - CYCLE FROM NAMO BUDDHA TO LYAKURIBHANJAYAN, AND ON TO GODAVARI 40 KM
It is quite an undulating bike ride from Namo Buddha to Lyakuribhanjayan on a mixture of tarmac and dirt roads. From the pass, it's a fun 14 km descent on some hairpin bends to Godavari. Godavari is home to Nepal's National Botanical Gardens and has many nurseries. The town has a monastery and is also becoming a popular hang-gliding spot.
Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel View Bhrikuti, Godavari Or Similar
  6. Day 6 - DRIVE FROM GODAVARI TO DAMAN 5 HOURS. RIDE TO HETAUDA 50 KM DESCENT
It's a long but interesting drive to Daman passing many towns and villages. There are quite a few slow going, zig-zag dirt road sections. You pass various monasteries and shrines as you weave your way up, in the vehicle, through wooded hillsides, eventually reaching Daman at 8000 ft. From Daman you continue climbing for about 5 or 10 minutes in the vehicle, until your highest point, before off-loading the bikes and beginning your epic 2 ½ - 3 hour, 6000 ft descent on two wheels. The descent is all on tarmac and zig-zags through forested countryside, passing many villages. The gradient is not too steep and there are just a few flat and minor uphill sections. Once you reach the bridge at the bottom, you have a 10km section on the highway, mostly gently downhill, to your hotel in Hetauda.
Overnight iconOvernight: Hotel Avocado, Hetauda Or Similar
  7. Day 7 - RIDE FROM HETAUDA TO CHITWAN 90 KM, FLAT
A long day today, but flat and mostly tarmacked so you can chew up the miles pretty quickly. You are on a major highway for 74km passing many small towns, with a moderate amount of traffic. Once you leave the highway, it's a pleasant 16 km ride on the flat which alternates between stony track and tarmac. The going will be slower here but more pleasant and engaging as you pass village houses and farmland. Including your lunch stop and a couple of tea stops en route, it should take around 6 ½ hours to reach your lodge.

You will have time in the cool of the late afternoon to enjoy a short bullock cart ride into Tharu village where there is a very small museum. It's a very pleasant and clean village and you'll no doubt have a look inside one of the houses. You can return by cart or foot. Before dinner you can relax on the terrace and hopefully the white spotted deer will come down to the river for a sunset drink.
Overnight iconOvernight: Into The Wild Eco Resort, Chitwan Or Similar
  8. Day 8 - FULL DAY’S ACTIVITIES AT ‘INTO THE WILD’ ECO RESORT
This morning you'll have a ride on a dugout canoe along the Rapti river, with many birds to see including kingfishers, egrets, herons, and ruddy shell ducks. You'll also see gharial and mugger crocodiles. At the bridge, about an hour downstream, you'll leave your dugout canoe and cross the bridge into the national park. Here you'll see the crocodile breeding centre. Gharial crocodiles are critically endangered due to loss of habitat, pollution and poaching. You'll continue your walk along a narrow jeep track and no doubt see one horned rhinos, many different types of birds, wild boar and mahouts riding on elephants. You'll return to the lodge for lunch and later enjoy another nature walk. In the evening you'll have an interesting and informative talk/slideshow about the national park.
Overnight iconOvernight: Into The Wild Eco Resort, Chitwan Or Similar
  9. Day 9 - TRANSFER TO AIRPORT AT BHARATPUR. FLY TO KATHMANDU.
Today you'll drive the short distance to the airport at Bharatpur, and fly to Kathmandu. You'll be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. There should be time in the afternoon to do any last minute shopping or sightseeing.
Overnight iconOvernight: Shangri La Hotel, Kathmandu
  10. Day 10 - DEPART KATHMANDU.
Transfer to the airport for your flight home.
