Essential Information - Food & Equipment

Can I hire clothing or equipment from Mountain Kingdoms?

Certain items are available from us which will save you considerable expense if you do not already own them. Our most requested items of kit hire are:
a 4-season down sleeping bag - £55* per trek
down jacket - £45* per trek

*Our stocks are limited so these should be booked well in advance. Prices include VAT. A fully refundable deposit is also required.

Full details of all our items for hire are supplied along with your trek dossier once a booking has been made.

What will the food be like on a trekking holiday?

There’s plenty of it and often our clients say that food on trek is even better than meals in hotels. Certainly it is important to eat and drink as much as possible on trek as you will be using a lot of calories each day. We can cater for special diets on all types of holiday as long as we're notified in advance.

On camping trips the food is cooked by a camp cook and assistants who have a wide repertoire of local and European dishes. Food is always prepared and cooked to meet the highest standards of hygiene. On tea house and lodge treks we choose places where we know the proprietors provide good, varied food and run a clean kitchen.

In the major towns and cities you will normally be staying on a bed and breakfast only basis, allowing you to try local restaurants. Once on trek, you will be provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. Lunch may be a cold picnic style meal or a hot meal. Supplementary snacks are often provided by your trek crew to help keep your energy levels up between meals.

Meal plans are given on each individual holiday itinerary - you can download these from the relevant holiday page or contact the office for them to be sent to you.

What clothing and equipment will I need?

Clothing and equipment is very much a matter of personal choice and preference. An equipment and clothing list is provided in your specific trip dossier which is sent out once you have made a booking. If you have any queries please do give us a ring.

Everyone who books a holiday with us receives a free Mountain Kingdoms kit bag which will be sent approximately two to three weeks prior to departure. The kit bag can be locked with a small padlock and we recommend you take one with you. Based on feedback from our clients we are now using a specialist UK supplier to produce our kit bags. They are made from water resistant fabric, with double stitched bonded nylon seals to make them extra durable. We advise you to carry any fragile items with you in your day sack.

Please note that on trek (unless otherwise stated), your baggage weight limit is 15 kilos, strictly restricted to one kit bag per person. We recommend you take a spare small grip bag, along with a padlock, for any kit you do not need on the actual trek. This can be left at your hotel, or with our agent before the trek, and will give you some clean clothes to come back to.

On all trips involving overnight trekking (with the exception of a few days on the Milford Track) your kit bag will be transported for you, leaving you to carry just your day sack. Your kit bag, along with the tents, food and camping gear will be carried on trek by jeep, mule, horse, yak and/or porters.
